Wedding hair and makeup trends and styles are basically all over the place. For the past 4-5 years, it has been predominantly the strapless and/or mermaid style bridal dress. The dresses are more form fitting and have small or no trains. They’ve been choosing hairstyles with a low messy or controlled messy bun. Either on the side, mid-back or low-back of the head with some random loose curls hanging. If they wear a veil, they usually wear it for the ceremony and remove for the reception – it is mostly a chapel length veil and fresh flowers are worn in the hair. The bridesmaids usually complemented this look with similar hairstyle although each bridesmaid wore dresses that ranged in length and were various styles in the same color that flattered their individual body shape.
It is comprised of many things. The number one reason is how she envisions herself on her most important day! Of course, the same as any other trend, the look of the style she is targeting is primarily dictated by the style of the dress that she falls in love with. Is it romantic? If that’s her targeted look, the hair should be less structured and whimsical. A loose, low bun with face-framing wisps and several attached curls as well as random loose ones is a very popular style for the lacy, boho, non- traditional, unstructured wedding dress. If they wear a headpiece it is usually minimal. Fresh flowers in a crown or a half-crown shape, or random small flowers or pearl or jeweled pins decorating the bun is all that’s needed to complete this look. If a veil is worn, it’s shorter and very plain.
The bridesmaids are usually less formal. Shorter, knee-length dresses vs. the traditional long dress. The baby doll dress, empire waist, and loose fit are chosen over the more structured bridesmaids dress. Many times non-matching dresses are chosen in similar hues of the same color. The hair is usually very unstructured. Braids of all sorts are incorporated into the style or are the chosen style. The fishtail braid being most popular. Makeup is minimal, light mascara and pale lips. Earth tones for eyeshadows accentuate the focus on the eyes. The ceremony, as well as reception, are outside in a garden or beach; less formal settings.
If the more traditional look is preferred. It usually takes place in the church, not on the beach. The reception is more formal, sometimes a sit-down dinner usually held after 5 pm and inside a ballroom. The dress is what you imagine, sweetheart neckline or with sleeves and fuller bottom with a longer train. The hair is more coiffed – a low chignon or a slick straight classic look is chosen. The slick side ponytail or even finger waves are becoming popular again. Birdcage veils and large jeweled combs or wide jeweled headbands are extremely complementary with this look. The veil is longer to match the train and is usually jewel adorned. It will either be complemented with a jeweled comb that can be left in the hair if the veil is removed or adds to the formality of this look if the veil is worn all day. The bridesmaids are also more coiffed. They wear long dresses and their hairstyles are smoother and structured as well. Again, the very slick side or high ponytail is in this category, there is very little messiness and more controlled sleek loops or curls. The position of the fullest part of the hairstyle is usually placed in the mid-back or high on the head. This style lends to a less trendy, more classic look. The makeup is neutral. Not glamorous. Although false lashes and eyeliner may be worn as well as a bolder lip color, it is a very classic, defined look.
Another upcoming trend is the 50’s fashion. The hair is very coiffed. Finger waves are predominant and tight rolled curls or pin curls that are left and pinned in the curl position dominate this look. Red lips and paler skin are chosen. The eyes are less bold. Mascara and blush are worn but secondary to the bold lip. The bridesmaids follow with fitted waist dresses to the knee and a much fuller skirt. This ‘Golden Age’ era is making its entrance into the fashion and bridal industry. It is a theme that is very selective and not universally chosen as of yet nor can be pulled off by a majority. However, when done correctly, it is striking.
Of course, these are only a few of the trends beginning to appear for the upcoming 2018 wedding season. The wedding hair and makeup style you choose will be the one that makes you look and feel the most beautiful. It can be any of the ones listed or your own combination of styles. There are so many choices. Happy wedding dress shopping and congratulations!!
